Things to do in and around Negombo
Dutch Fort gateway
The ruins of the Dutch fort near the lagoon mouth still have their gateway, inscribed with the date 1678.
Lellama fish market
One of the largest fish markets in the country, beside the Negombo lagoon. Go early in the morning, when the boats come in.
The Dutch canal
A colonial-era canal runs through Negombo; the Dutch extended the old network and the British completed it in the early 1800s. Boat trips leave from the town.
St Mary's Church
Negombo's landmark Catholic church, completed in 1922, with a painted ceiling — the town is so Catholic it is known as 'Little Rome'.
Negombo lagoon
Outrigger canoes, mangroves and birdlife; lagoon boat trips often combine the canal and the fishing villages.
Beach and hotel strip
Lewis Place and Porutota Road hold most of the beach hotels, restaurants and bars, a short drive from the airport.

Negombo is on the west coast, so its driest months are roughly November to April. May to October brings the south-west monsoon: more rain and rougher sea, but the airport is still only minutes away, so it works all year as a transit stop.
