Book a Taxi →🧘 How Tall Is It Really? Setting the Record Straight
Search for this temple and you will be told, again and again, that it holds the tallest seated Buddha statue in the world. It is a lovely claim and it is not true — and repeating it does the place a disservice, because what is actually true is remarkable enough.
The Kande Viharaya Buddha stands 48.8 metres (160 feet) — given in the temple's own traditional measure as 107 riyans. That makes it the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, and one of the tallest seated Buddhas anywhere. But several seated Buddhas around the world are considerably larger:
| Seated Buddha | Location | Height | Feet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wat Muang | Ang Thong, Thailand | 92 m | 300 ft |
| Leshan Giant Buddha | Sichuan, China | 71 m | 233 ft |
| Buddha Dordenma | Thimphu, Bhutan | 54 m | 177 ft |
| Kande Viharaya ← | Aluthgama, Sri Lanka | 48.8 m | 160 ft |
So: Sri Lanka's tallest, and genuinely one of the world's great seated Buddhas — just not the largest on earth. The figure is shown in Bhoomisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture, the moment the Buddha calls the earth to witness his enlightenment. The foundation stone was laid on 10 November 2002 and the statue was opened in 2007.

🛕 A Temple Older Than the Statue by Three Centuries
Most visitors photograph the Buddha and leave, which is a shame, because the statue is the newest thing here by some margin. Kande Viharaya was established in about 1734 by Venerable Karapagala Dewamitta Thero, on the advice of Venerable Udugama Chandrasara Thero of the Galapatha Raja Maha Vihara. The image house is older still — 1731 — with three arched entrances, an ornate makara thorana and painted murals inside, along with Buddha figures in several postures.
The bell-shaped stupa sits beneath an octagonal shelter on three terraces; an earlier stupa here dates to the Buddhist year 2327 (1784 CE), and the larger present structure was raised in 2479 (1936 CE) by Venerable Pothuwila Sri Saranatissa Nayaka Thero. The Bo tree is over three hundred years old, ringed by an octagonal wall carved with scenes of the bringing of the Sri Maha Bodhi sapling to Sri Lanka.
There is also a cluster of devales — shrines to the gods — including the Sri Vishnu Maha Devala and the Kataragama Devala. The customary order is to pay homage to the Buddha first, then transfer merit to the gods. The temple has run a monastic college, the Kshetharama Maha Pirivena, since 1904.
Temple, then two Bawa gardens. Brief Garden is 6 km away and Lunuganga 9 km — TaxiGo runs the loop with waiting time at each stop.
Plan the Day →🎟️ Entry, Hours and the Dress Code
Entry is free
No ticket, no foreigner rate, no counter — unusual in Sri Lanka for a site this well known. There is a donation box near the shrine and the temple relies on it. Something in the region of LKR 200–500 is a normal gesture.
Hours
Roughly 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, daily. This is a working temple rather than a ticketed attraction, so it keeps generous hours — but go early or late, not at midday, when the paving is genuinely too hot for bare feet.
Dress code
Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone. Footwear and hats off before entering shrine areas. Carry a sarong or light scarf — beachwear will not do, and you may be turned back.
One rule worth taking seriously: never pose with your back to a Buddha image for a photograph. It reads as deeply disrespectful in Sri Lanka, and visitors have been detained over it. Stand beside or in front, not in front of it with your back turned.

🪷 The Stalls on the Approach Road
The lane up to the temple is lined with stalls under patched umbrellas selling lotus and water lily blooms, trays of fruit, incense and small packets of jasmine. These are offerings, not souvenirs — you carry them up and lay them at the shrine or the Bo tree, and leave them there.
Buying a bunch of lilies costs very little and is, quietly, the thing that turns a photo stop into a visit. The families running these stalls have traded on this road for years and the temple's visitors are their living.

🧭 Finding It

🗺️ Build It Into a Better Day
Kande Viharaya takes about an hour. On its own that is a short outing — but three of the west coast's best sights sit within ten kilometres of each other, and almost nobody strings them together:
Brief Garden — 6 km
Bevis Bawa's hillside garden and house, with Donald Friend's mural and the sculptures the two of them made. Allow 60–90 minutes.
Read our Brief Garden guide →Lunuganga — 9 km
Geoffrey Bawa's estate, the birthplace of tropical modernism. Brief inspired it, so seeing both in a day is the point.
Madu River — 10 km
Mangrove boat safari from Balapitiya, best in the late afternoon once the temple and gardens are done.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Kande Viharaya Buddha the tallest seated Buddha in the world?
No, and this is the most repeated error about the temple. At 48.8 m (160 ft) it is surpassed by Wat Muang in Thailand at 92 m, the Leshan Giant Buddha in China at 71 m and Buddha Dordenma in Bhutan at 54 m. What is accurate — and impressive enough — is that it is Sri Lanka's tallest Buddha statue, and one of the tallest seated Buddhas anywhere.
How tall is the Buddha statue at Kande Viharaya?
48.8 metres, or 160 feet — given in the temple's own traditional measure as 107 riyans. It shows the Buddha in Bhoomisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture, which is a seated posture. The foundation stone was laid on 10 November 2002 and the statue opened in 2007.
Is there an entrance fee at Kande Viharaya?
No. Entry is free for everyone, including foreign visitors — unusual for a site of this scale in Sri Lanka. Donations towards the temple's upkeep are welcomed and there is a donation box near the shrine, but nobody will ask you for money at the gate.
What are Kande Viharaya's opening hours?
The temple is open daily from about 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It is a working temple rather than a ticketed attraction, so hours are generous, but early morning and late afternoon are far more pleasant than the middle of the day.
What is the dress code at Kande Viharaya?
Modest dress is required: shoulders covered and legs covered to below the knee, for men and women alike. Footwear must be removed before entering the shrine areas, and hats should come off. Avoid turning your back on the Buddha statue for photographs — it is considered disrespectful.
Where exactly is Kande Viharaya?
On a hill above Dharga Town, just inland from Aluthgama in the Kalutara District, signposted from the Galle Road between the 60 and 61 km posts. It is about 2 km from Aluthgama, 4 km from Bentota and 4 km from Beruwala.
What does 'Kande Viharaya' mean?
'Kanda' means hill in Sinhala, so Kande Viharaya is simply 'the temple on the hill'. You will also see it written Kande Vihara or Kande Rajamaha Viharaya.
How old is Kande Viharaya?
The temple was established in about 1734 by Venerable Karapagala Dewamitta Thero, on the advice of Venerable Udugama Chandrasara Thero of the Galapatha Raja Maha Vihara. The image house is older still, dated to 1731, and the Bo tree is over three hundred years old.
What is there to see besides the giant Buddha?
Quite a lot, and most visitors miss it. There is the 1731 image house with its painted murals and ornate makara thorana, the bell-shaped stupa under an octagonal shelter, the three-hundred-year-old Bo tree inside its sculpted octagonal wall, and a group of devales including the Sri Vishnu Maha Devala and the Kataragama Devala.
How long do you need at Kande Viharaya?
Around 45 minutes to an hour is comfortable — long enough for the statue, the image house, the stupa and the Bo tree without rushing. Add time if you arrive during a puja.
Can I combine Kande Viharaya with Brief Garden?
Yes, and it is the obvious pairing. Brief Garden, Bevis Bawa's estate, is only about 6 km away — roughly a quarter of an hour. Add Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's estate, at 9 km, and you have a full and varied day out from the Bentota beaches.
What should I buy at the flower stalls?
Lotus and water lily blooms, and small trays of fruit, sold from the stalls lining the approach road. They are offerings rather than souvenirs — you place them at the shrine. Prices are modest and buying from the stalls supports families who have traded there for years.
Is Kande Viharaya suitable for children and wheelchair users?
Children are welcome, though it is an active place of worship and quiet behaviour is expected. Access involves steps and sloping ground, and shrine areas must be entered barefoot, which makes it harder going for wheelchair users.
Is photography allowed at Kande Viharaya?
Yes, and the statue is hard to resist. The one firm rule is not to pose with your back to a Buddha image, which causes genuine offence in Sri Lanka and has landed visitors in trouble. Ask before photographing monks.
When is the best time to visit?
Early morning, soon after opening, when it is cool and the temple is at its most active with local worshippers. Poya days — the monthly full moon — are atmospheric but crowded, and alcohol and meat are not sold on the island that day.
How do I get to Kande Viharaya from Bentota?
It is about 4 km, roughly 11 minutes by road. A TaxiGo car is Rs 4,200 (about US$14) — fixed, air-conditioned, and your driver waits while you visit.
How far is Kande Viharaya from Colombo Airport?
About 106 km, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes using the Southern Expressway for most of the way. A TaxiGo sedan is Rs 16,270 (about US$56) with tolls included.
How do I book a taxi to Kande Viharaya with TaxiGo?
Use the fare tables on this page — every row links to the TaxiGo transfer page for that exact route, where the mini, sedan and van price is confirmed before you book. You can also book at taxigo.lk or message TaxiGo on WhatsApp on +94 77 083 3772.
Does the driver wait while I visit the temple?
Yes, on a return booking. Mention waiting time when you book. It matters here because the temple sits above Dharga Town rather than on the main coast road, so flagging down a passing tuk-tuk afterwards is not reliable.
Are TaxiGo's fares fixed?
Yes. The price you agree is the price you pay — no meter, no per-bag charge, and expressway tolls are already included. Every fare in the tables here is the same one shown on the transfer page when you book.
