Brief Garden, Aluthgama: Entrance Fee, Opening Hours & How to Get There (2026)
Five acres of hillside garden a few kilometres inland from the Bentota beach strip, made by a man who spent forty years on it. Brief Garden is the work of Bevis Bawa — soldier, horticulturist, and older brother of the architect Geoffrey Bawa. It is also the garden that inspired Geoffrey to create Lunuganga, 13 km down the road. This page has the fees and hours as they are posted at the gate today, not the numbers still circulating online from years ago, plus the real cost of getting there from anywhere on the island.

Book a Taxi →🎫 Entrance Fees — the Current Ones
This is where most pages about Brief Garden will let you down. The figures repeated across travel sites — LKR 300 for the garden, LKR 1,000 with the house — are years out of date. The rates below are taken from the signboard standing at the entrance, photographed in August 2026. It is the first image on this page, so you can read them yourself.

Fees are set by the estate and can change without notice. TaxiGo does not collect them — you pay at the gate, in cash, and there is no ATM up the lane. Verified August 2026.
🌿 The Man and the Garden
In 1929, a twenty-year-old Bevis Bawa came to Kalawila to manage the family rubber estate he had inherited through his mother. It was called Brief — the story goes that his father, a lawyer, bought it with the fee from a single case. Bevis stayed for the rest of his life, and spent roughly forty years turning a working plantation into one of the most admired gardens in Asia.
He was not a trained landscape architect. He was a Major in the Ceylon Light Infantry and, for a time, aide-de-camp to four successive British governors — a six-foot-seven figure who gardened by eye, cutting views and vistas into a hillside rather than drawing them on paper. The result is a garden of rooms: you turn a corner and the space changes completely, from dense bamboo to an open water terrace to a moss-floored clearing with a stone bench.

Bevis opened Brief to the public in 1969, by which point it was already well known. He kept working on it until he died in 1992.
👥 Bevis or Geoffrey? The Mix-Up Worth Clearing Up
Search for Brief Garden and you will find it attributed to Geoffrey Bawa often enough to be confusing. It is not his. Brief is Bevis Bawa's, and the signboard at the entrance says so plainly: "Brief — Residence of Bevis Bawa."
The connection is real, though, and better than the myth. Bevis was the older brother. He began Brief roughly two decades before Geoffrey started work on Lunuganga at Bentota, and Brief is widely credited as the garden that showed Geoffrey what was possible — the reason the younger Bawa turned from law to architecture and made the estate that defined tropical modernism.
The two estates are 13 km apart, about half an hour. Seeing them in the same day — the soldier's garden and the architect's — is the single best reason to make this trip, and very few visitors realise it is possible.
Do both Bawa estates in one day. Brief and Lunuganga are 13 km apart — TaxiGo runs the pairing with waiting time at each.
Plan the Bawa Day →🎨 Donald Friend, and the Faces in the Garden
In the mid-1950s the Australian artist Donald Friend arrived at Brief meaning to stay a fortnight. He stayed about six years. His mural still runs along the wall inside the entrance of the house, and the collaboration went further than paint: Bevis sculpted from Friend's drawings, which is where the garden's odd population comes from — anthropomorphic vases, a Bacchus birdbath, and the fantastical heads that watch you from plinths in the undergrowth.
They are the detail people remember. You come expecting a garden and find a slightly surreal one, with a stone face in a tricorn hat staring out of the foliage.

🏠 The House — Worth the Higher Ticket
You can pay LKR 500 and walk the grounds only. Don't. The house is where the story is: Bevis Bawa's own furniture and collected antiques, family photographs on the walls, Friend's mural, and cool dark corridors that open onto blazing green doorways. This was one of the island's great social addresses — Vivien Leigh stayed while filming Elephant Walk, Laurence Olivier and Agatha Christie came, along with Peter Finch and the designer Barbara Sansoni.

🧭 How to Get There
The route
From the Galle Road at Aluthgama, turn inland and pass through Dharga Town. Shortly after, a small signboard with "Brief" in red letters marks a left turn up a narrow lane. It climbs, it is barely wide enough for two vehicles, and it is easy to miss — which is why most people arrive with a driver who has done it before.

🎒 Practical Advice
Go early
Arrive near the 8:00 AM opening. Soft light, bearable heat, and you are ahead of the coach groups from the coastal hotels.
Wear grippy shoes
The garden runs down a slope on stepped stone terraces and they stay damp under the canopy. Sandals are a bad idea.
Bring cash
Entry is paid at the gate and there is no ATM up the lane. Carry rupees, and dollars if you are on the foreign rate.
Allow 45–90 minutes
It is only five acres, but it is layered. Rushing it is the one guaranteed way to waste the trip.
Take the house ticket
The mural, the portraits and the interiors are half the point. The garden-only ticket saves little and costs a lot.
Mind the access
Stepped terraces and narrow damp paths make it hard going for wheelchairs and unsteady walkers.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Who created Brief Garden — Bevis or Geoffrey Bawa?
Bevis Bawa. This is the single most common mix-up about the place. Bevis Bawa (1909–1992) was the older brother of the architect Geoffrey Bawa. Geoffrey's own estate is Lunuganga, about 13 km away at Bentota, and Brief is widely credited as the garden that inspired him to create it. The signboard at the entrance reads 'Brief — Residence of Bevis Bawa'.
What is the entrance fee for Brief Garden in 2026?
As posted on the board at the entrance: US$10 for foreign passport holders, converted at the Central Bank middle rate of the day, and LKR 2,000 for expatriates and Sri Lankans. That covers both the garden and the house. Viewing the garden alone is LKR 500. Many websites still quote LKR 300 or LKR 1,000 — those figures are years out of date.
What are Brief Garden's opening hours?
Open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, as stated on the entrance signboard. Some listings still say 5:00 PM; plan around the 4:00 PM close so you are not turned away, and arrive by 2:30 PM if you want an unhurried visit.
Where exactly is Brief Garden?
Kalawila Village, Beruwala 12070, in the hills a few kilometres inland from the coast. It is about 6 km from Aluthgama, 8 km from Bentota and 8 km from Beruwala. From the Galle Road at Aluthgama you turn inland through Dharga Town, then follow the small red 'Brief' signs up a narrow lane.
How far is Brief Garden from Colombo Airport?
About 99 km, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by road using the Southern Expressway for most of the way. A TaxiGo sedan is Rs 21,690 (about US$75), fixed, with tolls included.
How long do you need at Brief Garden?
Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The garden is compact — around five acres — but it is layered, so it rewards slow walking. Add time for the house, where the Donald Friend mural is.
Can you visit the house as well as the garden?
Yes, and it is worth it. The house holds Bevis Bawa's furniture, family portraits, collected antiques and the mural Donald Friend painted inside the entrance. The higher ticket covers both; the LKR 500 ticket is grounds only.
Who was Donald Friend and why does he matter here?
Donald Friend was an Australian artist who came to Brief intending to stay a couple of weeks and stayed roughly six years, from the mid-1950s. His mural still hangs inside the house, and Bevis sculpted from Friend's drawings — the anthropomorphic vases, the Bacchus birdbath and the fantastical heads scattered through the garden came out of that collaboration.
Which famous people visited Brief Garden?
Bevis Bawa hosted Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier — Leigh was in Ceylon filming Elephant Walk — along with Agatha Christie, Peter Finch, the artist Donald Friend and the designer Barbara Sansoni. It was one of the island's more remarkable social addresses for decades.
How big is Brief Garden and when was it made?
Bevis Bawa arrived at Kalawila in 1929, aged 20, to manage the family rubber estate he inherited through his mother, and spent close to forty years turning it into a garden. He opened it to the public in 1969, and kept working on it until his death in 1992.
Can I combine Brief Garden with Lunuganga in one day?
Yes, and most people should. Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's estate, is only about 13 km away — roughly half an hour. Seeing both in a day gives you the two Bawa brothers side by side, which is the real reason to make the trip. TaxiGo runs the pairing regularly.
Is Brief Garden suitable for children or wheelchair users?
Children are fine, though it is a garden rather than an attraction built for them. Access is difficult for wheelchairs: the garden runs across a slope on stepped terraces with uneven stone paths, narrow in places and often damp.
What should I wear and bring?
Closed shoes with grip — the stone paths get slippery. Insect repellent, water, and a light rain layer outside the dry season. The lane in is narrow, so a smaller vehicle is easier than a large van.
Is there parking at Brief Garden?
There is space to park near the entrance, but the approach lane is narrow and steep in places. Most visitors arrive by car or tuk-tuk from the coast rather than driving themselves.
What is the best time of day to visit?
Early morning, shortly after the 8:00 AM opening. The light is soft, the heat is manageable, the tour groups from the coastal hotels have not arrived, and the garden's water features look their best before midday glare.
How do I book a taxi to Brief Garden with TaxiGo?

Is the tuk-tuk from Bentota a good idea?
It is cheap and it works, but the last stretch is a narrow uphill lane and tuk-tuks are open to the weather, which matters on this coast. A TaxiGo car from Bentota is Rs 5,200 with a fixed price, air conditioning and a driver who waits for you.
Does TaxiGo wait while I look around?
Yes. On a return transfer your driver waits at the entrance — you are not left arranging a ride back from a rural lane with patchy mobile signal. Tell TaxiGo you want waiting time when you book.
Can TaxiGo build Brief Garden into a longer day?
Yes. It pairs naturally with Lunuganga, the Bentota beaches, the Kande Vihara temple and a Madu River boat safari. Add your plans in the booking notes and the adjusted fare is quoted up front.
Are TaxiGo's prices fixed?
Yes. The fare you agree is the fare you pay — no meter, no per-bag charge, and expressway tolls are already included. Every price in the tables on this page is the same one you will see on the transfer page when you book.
