How TaxiGo Measures Taxi Distances and Sets Fixed Fares
Ask three websites how far it is from Colombo Airport to Ella and you can get three different answers — 133 km, 206 km or 335 km. They are all "right"; they just measure different things. A fair fixed price has to start from the right one: the road distance and driving time of the route your driver will actually take. This page explains how we measure every TaxiGo route and why the numbers you see elsewhere differ.
How we measure every route
- Your exact points. We measure from your actual pickup — the airport terminal, your hotel, a station — to your actual drop-off, not from one town centre to another.
- By road, with Google Maps. Each trip is measured with Google Maps driving directions, which give the road distance and the driving time for the route.
- The route your driver takes. That is normally the fastest route, which in Sri Lanka usually means the expressways — even when they are a few kilometres longer.
- Distance and time make the fare. Our fare engine prices the trip from both, for a mini car, a sedan and a van. Tolls, fuel and the driver are included.
- The price is fixed. It is per vehicle, not per person, and it does not change for traffic.
Why taxi distances differ between websites
We measured six popular trips three ways on 11 October 2026: the fastest road route (the one we price), the route that avoids expressways, and the straight line between the two points.

The usual reasons a published distance is different:
- Straight-line distance. The distance "as the crow flies" is always shorter than any road — from the airport to Ella it is 133 km, but no car can drive it.
- The old road instead of the expressway. To Ella or Udawalawe the inland road is far fewer kilometres but over an hour slower; from the airport to Galle the coastal Galle Road is about the same distance but more than twice as long in time.
- Town centre instead of your hotel. A figure "to Galle" may be to the town centre, not to a hotel 10 km down the coast.
- Copied numbers. Some figures are copied from site to site, and may date from before the expressways opened.

Questions about distances and fares
Why is the expressway distance sometimes longer than the old road?
Because the expressway is not always the most direct line. To Ella or Udawalawe, the fastest way from the airport runs south on the Southern Expressway and then inland, which adds kilometres but saves an hour or more of slow driving through towns and hills. We price the route your driver actually drives.
Does the fare change if there is traffic?
No. The fare is fixed when you book, for the whole vehicle. Traffic, road works or a longer wait at the airport do not change it.
Is the price per person?
No — per vehicle. A mini car, sedan or van costs the same whether one person travels or the vehicle is full.
Why do other websites show a different distance for the same trip?
Usually because they measure something else: a straight line, the old road instead of the expressway, the town centre instead of your hotel, or a figure copied from another site. The table above shows how far apart those numbers can be for the same trip.
